Joy Doherty

December 19, 1926 — September 1, 2021

Joy McDaniel Doherty, Age 94 of Big Sandy, Tennessee departed this life surrounded by the love of her family on September 1, 2021.

Joy was born at home in the Lick Creek Community of Benton County on December 19, 1926 to the late Beatrice Clay and Blanche Askew McDaniel.

Joy was married to the late JC Doherty on April 7th 1946 in Biloxi MS.  She was a member of Lick Creek United Methodist Church.  Throughout her life she was no stranger to work, first and most importantly as a mother and grandmother but also as a talented seamstress at Salant & Salant Shirt Factory in Paris TN and later helping her husband JC as a commercial fisherman and owner operator of Doherty’s Service Station in Big Sandy, TN. She was slow to complain and always enjoyed time spent with her family and friends, especially on holidays, at fish fries and dancing.  After 94 years she was most proud her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Joy was preceded in death by her infant brother, Robert Franklin McDaniel, brother, Fred Clay McDaniel a casualty of WWII.

She is survived by her son; Danny & Linda Doherty of Big Sandy, TN and daughter; Judy & Robert Phifer of Camden, TN, Twin-sister Joyce McDaniel Evans of Big Sandy, TN, 3 Grandsons, Randy Allen Jr of Paris, TN, John Christian Phifer of Nashville TN and Nicholas Grant Phifer (Carmen) of Cleveland, TN.  3 great grandsons, Randy Allen III, Conor Grant Phifer and Robert Avett Phifer and 2 great-granddaughters Abby Kate Allen and Isabel June Phifer as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend thanks to the staff of Camden Healthcare and Stockdale-Malin Funeral Home as well as the numerous friends and extended family who have shown support over the years.

A private graveside ceremony will be held at Stockdale Cemetery in Lick Creek.
